Is your hard drive bursting at the seams with digital video? Or maybe you've got video you'd like to upload to your favorite social networking site but the file size is just too big? Compressing your video files is an ideal way to free up hard drive space or make for quicker more efficient uploads to sites like YouTube or Facebook.
The term "Codec" is short for “compression/decompression” and is used to compress a file for streaming and decompress a file for playback. Divx and Xvid are two of the best and most preferred “codecs” used today. The free application Auto Gordian Knot is an excellent choice for compressing .avi, .mpeg, and other file formats using Xvid or Divx.
How to Compress a Video File with Divx or Xvid codec -- powered by eHow.com
You'll need to download AutoGK. Unzip (if necessary) and run the install. When the install is complete and you're ready to convert a file, open the application. To choose the file to convert, click on the little folder to the right of the input file text box and browse to the file. Only supported files will show up by default. The output file will autofill with an _agk added to the original file name, but you may choose a different name if you prefer.

Under Advanced Settings you can choose audio type, and codec. Typically, the default settings are fine. If you do not already have Divx installed and want to use it, you'll have to download it at divx.com.

When you have all your settings ready, click on the “Add Job” button to add the conversion job to the queue. You can add more than one conversion job to convert multiple files at once. Click "Start" to begin the conversion. The conversion times can vary greatly depending on your computer hardware and size of the file you are converting. The log window at the lower left will show the progress.

When completed, test the video to be sure it looks and sounds ok. If the quality is poor, adjust the output settings and run the conversion again on your original file.
