Improve Productivity and Workflow with Windows 7 Jump Lists

Windows 7 Jump Lists are a nice little way to improve your productivity. Jump Lists can provide quick access to files, favorite websites,  tasks, and commands from the Task bar or Start menu. Frequently or recently used items are automatically added to Jump Lists, but you are able to pin your favorite items to the Jump Lists as well.

There are a couple ways to access Jump Lists. One way is to right click on an icon on the task bar.

Another way is from the Start Menu. Some of the items on your Start menu will have a small pointer at the right. Click on this pointer to see the Jump list. The same items will appear on the Jump Lists of a program on both the Task bar and Start Menu.

Frequently or recently viewed files or websites will appear on your jump list. If you want a favorite to always appear on the Jump List, you can "pin" an item to the Jump list.

"Pinned" items will then appear at the top of the lists.

To remove a "Pinned" item, you can click on the Pin icon to the right or right-click on the item and select "Unpin from list."

To remove an item from the list, right-click on the item and select "Remove from this list."

You can pin items to the taskbar so that they can be access with a signal click. This is similar to Quick Launch in previous version of Windows. Right click on the items icon on the taskbar when it's open...

or from the Start Menu...

You can increase (or decrease) the amount of items you can have in your Jump Lists. To do so, right click on the Task bar and select "Properties." On the Taskbar and Start Menu properties window, click on the Start menu tab, and click on the "Customize" button.

At the bottom of the window, you can choose “Number of recent items to display in Jump Lists.” You can increase the number to 60.

You'll have to actually open a file or web site before it will show up on the Jump list and allow you to pin it to the list. Unfortunately, there is no built in way to automatically customize Jump Lists. Go ahead play around a bit with Jump Lists. You may find them to help improve workflow and productivity.
